Alex from the shop went out to St. Bees yesterday. It looked a bit minging on the walk down but on arrival it was actually reasonably dry. There is a bit of algae on the platform still, particularly on the way the fisherman's steps, but if the weather stays like it is now it shouldn't be there for much longer. Overall, the boulders are in reasonable condition and should stay that way now for the rest of the season. A few people on the sport routes, some were a bit seepy but on the whole they looked ok.
Monday 24th March 2008
Cold in the lakes today and due to stay that way for a few days. Up high the turf is frozen and a recent dump of snow means that people are out winter climbing. If the weather continues conditions should build over the next day or so. A bit of high cloud and the odd flurry of snow are the current conditions.
Sunday 17th February 2008
The amazing weather conditions continue, and the crags are looking in tip top condition. Choose a sunny aspect and you could be in your t-shirt dodging sunburn.
Young George Ullrich has been making the most of the conditions with ascents of 2 E8's and a hard E7. Chris from the shop belayed him on Impact Day and comments that he looked super solid. Hopefully the conditions will remain as he has some more hard ascents he's keen to make.
Keep an eye on the blog for updates.
Monday 11th February 2008
Its gorgeous in the lakes today, no cloud, no wind- get yourself up for some hot rock action!
Wednesday 6th February 2008
A lovely day in the lakes today- at last. Blue skies, no wind and no rain. A great day to be in the fells.
Friday 1st February 2008
After a breezy start to the day it has now calmed down a bit and started snowing in town. It is not settling yet, but it almost certainly will be on the higher fells. This is set to carry on for the rest of the day and possibly over the weekend. A wintry weekend in the lakes should be on the cards.
Thursday 31st January 2008
It is a very windy morning in the lakes today, with slightly colder temperatures than we have experienced in the last week or two.
Saturday 12th January 2008
Just back from gable crag. Freezing level was quite high which meant that although the crag was lightly hoared, the turf was still not frozen- no climbing to be had. It seems that the massive down pour the other day has completely saturated the ground. Back in Ambleside though, it seems to have turned into quite a nice day.
Wednesday 9th January 2008
Reports from gable today say that the crag is not in condition yet, with little hoar frost and unfrozen turf. However it is a nice day in the lakes today, if a little windy.
Friday 4th January 2008
Snow down into Ambleside this morning, and a fair bit higher up. What is in the town is melting pretty quickly and it is warmer than it has been. Tomorrow the freezing level is expected to be above the summits, but it may drop again on sunday which could help firm up any snow which remains.
Monday 17th December 2007
Very cold in Ambleside this morning with a pretty hard frost. -4oc at 200m. There is not a cloud in the sky as far as we can see from town.
A couple of us had a walk up and over striding edge on Helvellyn yesterday (Sunday) to have a look at how things were shaping up behind red tarn. The Temperature inversion of the last few days has seemed to move on with freezing temps on the tops. Some of the easy gullies looked thin but climbable with a few keen parties on them. The rocks of Viking buttress were not hoared up at all, meaning the mixed routes are out of the question at the minute, but the turf should be well frozen now, we just need some cloud over the crags to start some hoar frost building on the routes, and maybe a dusting of snow to finish things off. With this cold weather set to stay for a while, things are looking up for the festive period!
Friday 14th December 2007
Its Baltic in the Lakes today but mostly in the valleys due to a temperature inversion we're experiencing at the moment, perfect bouldering weather the Bowderstone, Langdale boulders and Carrock fell would all be prime spots for a session.
Tuesday 11th December 2007
Some of the lads have been out today (Gable). Good conditions for walking (Clear with little wind) but unfortunately not for climbing due to a temperature inversion which seems set to stay for the next few days. Some snow but no hoar and turf not frozen.
